Harry Styles - As It Was (Lyrics) | You Know It's Not The Same As It Was

STYLES: Yeah, I think for me, like, home is just about friends. I think that's where I feel the most at home. And while this is, you know, such a personal album and so much about kind of my own journey to finding a place of home, I also feel like it's very much kind of dedicated to my friends.

Harry Styles - As It Was (Lyrics) | you know it's not the same as it was

STYLES: And I think much like happiness, that isn't necessarily a final resting place and it is a journey. And it's kind of peaks and troughs of happiness, sadness and, you know, all of the kind of things that make you feel alive.

STYLES: Yeah, I think, like, people have, you know, so much guilt with things that they don't necessarily need to have guilt with sometimes. And I think it's your right to kind of protect the space around you and be protective of yourself and look after yourself. And "Matilda's" a song - I mean, it means so much to me. I think it was a moment where it's not necessarily my place to make someone else's experience about me, but it's just wanting to kind of reassure them that I was listening.

STYLES: I mean, I think for me "As It Was" is - you know, it's about metamorphosis and kind of losing yourself, finding yourself, embracing the fact that life hits you at different times, not when you expect it and, you know, change is scary.

STYLES: Yeah, I think because I started so young, it became kind of like that's who I am. And I don't know that I ever stopped for long enough to kind of realize what I was if I didn't do it. But I think getting to a place where I feel like this is what I do and I love it, but it's not necessarily who I am just, like, feels like a much healthier place to be...

In this context, we can assume that Styles wants to "take the blue pill." He continues to pine for his lover, choosing to ignore how they've grown apart ("Seems you cannot be replaced / And I'm the one who will stay / In this world, it's just us / You know it's not the same as it was").

Even if reviews weren't outright surprised by this sound, they noted the seemingly brand new, well, direction. "Few people probably predicted the 23-year-old ex-One Direction superstar to drop the kind of album that makes your uncle or your mom perk up," read Variety's review. Pitchfork mused, "If you only know one thing about Harry Styles, it's probably that the album bucks the established trends governing bids for young male solo pop stardom." Styles becoming a rock star was something new, but looking back at the totality of his work, it's not quite as surprising as it might be at first glance.

I think that's the best way to put it, because you never know what you're going to be doing. You never know what the artist is going to want from you or not want from you. A lot of the job is just figuring all that stuff out and then trying to just have fun while you're doing it. I think it's just that good energy, good attitude, and good people tend to sort of gravitate together.

"As It Was" is a melodic goodbye to summer, with the bittersweet chorus "You know it's not the same as it was" and a synth hook reminiscent of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven." The track begins with the sample of a tiny voice: Styles' own goddaughter saying "Come on, Harry. We want to say goodnight to you." As American Songwriter puts it, the sample "puts a warm feeling in your heart as you are invited into 'Harry's House.'"
